Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather: Who Needs Who More?

Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather: Who Needs Who More?
By King J (Featured Columnist) on February 8, 2011

The year is 2031 and the neighborhood barbershop, one of the throwback ones that still uses real human barbers instead of the robot barbers, is packed with about a dozen men, old and young and they are all discussing boxing while getting their hair cut.

One of the senior most grandpa barbers has heard enough of the youngsters bragging about the new current 2031 pound for pound champion as they so ignorantly boast that he could have taken out anyone with ease through out the history of the sport of boxing.

This is the perfect time for gramps to educate all of these youngsters about the two top pound for pound fighters of his time Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Almost all of the youngsters begin to automatically dismiss both Pacquiao and Mayweather as they are so quick to deny either of them would have a chance against current 2031 pound for pound champ.

They begin to look up whatever they can on both Pacquiao and Mayweather from their new iPhone 24.0s.

Right away they see tons of videos and articles about both Manny and Floyd from the year 2011. Literally hundreds and hundreds of articles pleading from the media and fight fans to make the fight happen.

These kids then take notice to Mayweather's perfect record of 41(25)-0 and learn he was a 5 division world champion. They start to watch highlight videos of him schooling his opponents with ease, thoroughly outboxing and shoulder rolling his way to victory after victory.

They are most impressed watching Floyd put a clinic on a then undefeated Diego Corrales knocking him down 5 times with ease in their super featherweight title fight.

Then they see the Arturo Gatti fight for the WBC light welterweight title where Floyd destroys Gatti with his superior skills and speed. This fight makes them believe Floyd was the fastest fighter ever.

Next is the Zab Judah fight they see how Floyd is troubled in the early rounds against an equally fast fighter who also has power. Ultimately they see Floyd take the win in that fight. This makes them really wonder how would Floyd do against an equally fast fighter who can constantly pressure him for all 12 rounds.

After this fight the kids take notice that Floyd fights for the most part at the higher weight classes a very technical defensive style where he breaks down his opponents and outboxes and out points them rather than going for the knock out.

This current 2031 pound for pound champion is a beast who is fast, strong, and powerful but does not possess the stamina and technical ring IQ that Floyd had through out his career.

Out of the dozen fight fans in the barber shop only 4 of them decide that Floyd could probably defeat the current champion via a close decision. The majority of the shop decides that Floyd would get stopped by the 2031 number one fighter.

Then the kids look up Manny Pacquiao. They take notice to his impressive record of 52(38)-3.They see that he does have 3 losses earlier on in his career and they begin to take that into consideration.

They then learn that he is a 8 division world champion and the only boxer to win 10 world titles in 8 world divisions and also the only boxer to win 4 lineal title championships in 4 different weight classes.

The guys are rather impressed for these records have held up and no other fighter has even come close even 20 years later.

Watching his highlight videos they see him destroy: Barrera, Morales, Diaz, Hatton, De La Hoya, and Cotto.

Due to most of them having ADHD they overwhelmingly prefer Manny's more aggressive action packed fan friendly style to Mayweather's superior technical style.

They also notice that Manny does get hit a lot more than Floyd does but he also takes more risks and opens up more as well, just as the current 2031 champ does.

But also as the deciding factor in comparison to the 2031 champ they notice that Manny just as Floyd has tremendous stamina and does not fade as the rounds go on in the fight. They see the Cotto fight and how Manny was able to withstand the power shots and knock Cotto out in the 12th round.

The men take another vote and decide that out of 12 people 10 felt Manny would knock out the 2031 champion in the later rounds after accumulation of punches from various different angles. The other 2 ruled it would have been a draw.

A number of the kids then begin to wonder why Pacquiao and Mayweather never fought each other and the grandpa barber says do not even get me started on that one.

So they ask him who would win in a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather and gramps who is fight fan who prefers technical fighters over aggressive fighters says Floyd would have probably shoulder rolled his way to a decision.

The barber shop erupts in disapproval for they are all casual fans as most of the world and most fight fans in history are and they all scream hell no this Pacquiao dude would knock out Mayweather.

So there you have it. Again because the majority of the world are made up of casual fight fans an aggressive, powerful, fast fighter who goes for the knock outs will always defeat a more technical defensive minded fighter who does not let his hands go.

History will show that the numbers do not lie and at the end of the day Manny's historical records of being the only fighter to win 10 world titles in 8 world divisions and 4 lineal titles in 4 weight divisions, and being the BWAA fighter of the decade, will win and over power Mayweather's undefeated 41(25)-0 record.

Again the world is made up of casual fight fans not boxing experts so in closing the only way Mayweather can win the historical debate on who was better him or Pacquiao is if he beats Pacquiao.

If they never fight as this story would show 20 years from now that is how they will view both of these fighters.

So to answer the question who needs who more? Mayweather needs Pacquiao more than Pacquiao needs Mayweather.
